ChargeConnect Policy Report: Bridging Gaps in Romania’s EV Charging Network, by Ruxandra Miuti, Gabriel Munteanu, Silviu David, George Hacerian, Bucharest, 2024, ISBN 978-973-0-41641-1
The ChargeConnect Policy Report explores the critical deficiencies in Romania’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and presents actionable solutions to bridge existing gaps. As a citizen science initiative funded by the Impetus Accelerator, ChargeConnect actively engages communities in mapping charging stations, assessing accessibility, and identifying policy shortcomings. Through data-driven analysis and stakeholder collaboration, the report highlights key challenges, including uneven infrastructure distribution, insufficient fast-charging options, interoperability issues, and regulatory barriers that hinder widespread EV adoption.
The findings reveal a significant disparity between urban and rural EV infrastructure, exacerbating range anxiety and limiting the feasibility of long-distance travel. The report underscores the need for targeted infrastructure expansion, standardization of payment and interoperability frameworks, and the integration of renewable energy sources into Romania’s charging network. Drawing from best practices across Europe, ChargeConnect advocates for a phased implementation strategy, leveraging public-private partnerships, smart grid technologies, and policy alignment with EU directives to create a more resilient and user-friendly charging ecosystem.
By combining citizen science with evidence-based policymaking, ChargeConnect offers a comprehensive roadmap for accelerating Romania’s transition to sustainable electric mobility. The initiative not only addresses infrastructure deficiencies but also empowers communities to participate in shaping a greener, more inclusive transportation future.
